Improvisation, Archive, and Homage Symposium

November 7, 2026 - November 8, 2026

A two-day public program at The Kitchen’s Westbeth space in New York City featuring musical performances and a public discussion with MacArthur Fellows Claire Chase (2012), Mary Halvorson (2019), Jason Moran (2010), Ikue Mori (2022), Tomeka Reid (2022), and Craig Taborn (2025) moderated by music historian and gallerist, John Corbett. The symposium is the culminating event of Instrument Object, an exhibition by MacArthur Fellow Josiah McElheny (2006) at The Kitchen that transforms the space into a hybrid installation and performance venue. Through live performance and dialogue, the programming celebrates artistic collaboration with a reflection on sonic archiving and the interplay between sound and history.
