The Speaking in Pairs exhibit on display at Hunter College in New York City considers the aesthetic and political contexts of portrait photography. Furthering the exhibition’ emphasis on dialogue and duality, in a day of public dialogue paired speakers will explore themes centered on the power of representation, including a talk between photographers and MacArthur Fellows Susan Meiselas (1992) and Camilo Vergara (2002). Beginning with the work of August Sander, best known for his portrait work of ordinary people in the Weimar Republic, the artists reflect on the ways that portrait photography can enhance our understanding of history and culture.
