Art, Tech, and Representation

March 18, 2026

MacArthur Fellows Annie Dorsen (2019) and Dr. Safiya Noble (2021) engage in a discussion about the implications of emerging technologies on arts and culture, including how the training data and algorithmic architectures that AI relies on replicate and magnify biases and what can be done to mitigate these effects as AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life and the arts. The talk covers how representation is understood in artistic practice, how it is relevant both in theory and in the practice of sociology, and how data-driven representation is at the heart of algorithmic decision systems and generative AI.
