Overview
Technology in the Public Interest believes that evaluation, auditing, and accountability mechanisms are essential features of meaningful AI governance. Like all consequential technologies, AI systems require robust oversight to ensure their benefits are widely shared and harms and risks are mitigated.
Our grantmaking supports organizations focused on research and knowledge building, policy development and implementation, and strengthening networks of practitioners responsibly using AI in high-stakes domains. Most organizations we support cover two or more of these areas.
Because technology is not static, we also fund exploratory work at the intersection of technology and society. Current priority areas include advancing new thinking at the intersection of AI, national security, and geopolitics and advancing linguistic diversity in AI.
Across our work, we prioritize organizations that center public interest considerations such as human rights, equity, safety, security, and accountability.
What We Fund
Research
We strengthen the research foundations for public interest-focused AI evaluation, auditing, and accountability to inform policy, practice, and public knowledge; for advancing shared infrastructure; for best practices, and for journalism that deepens understanding of how AI impacts people and society.
Policy
Our grantmaking supports the development, implementation, and enforcement of AI laws, policies, and regulations that center public interest considerations and advance enforceable frameworks; accountability tools; and civil society networks that embed meaningful oversight into AI governance across key jurisdictions.
Practitioner Networks
We support networks of practitioners working on the frontlines of AI adoption in high-risk domains who seek to embed responsible practice at every stage of AI implementation, while also building cross-sector collaboration and shared practices.
Exploratory Work
Our exploratory work currently prioritizes two areas. First, we support new thinking, policy development and analysis, and convenings focused on advancing public interest considerations at the intersection of AI, national security, and geopolitics. Second, we support efforts to advance linguistic diversity in AI to more broadly extend the benefits of the technology.

While we are not accepting unsolicited proposals at this time, we are always eager to hear new ideas and perspectives.
