Audiences and demand for LGBTQ+ newspapers and media are growing, but the publications that serve LBGTQ+ audiences need additional resources. The LGBTQ+ Media Mapping Project offers the first in-depth look at the scope, impact, and needs of local LGBTQ+ media across the United States.
They range from one-person operations to established multimedia platforms telling stories by and for their communities, all while facing external threats and growing backlash against LGBTQ+ people. Their readers and listeners seek out reliable, factual and unbiased information about their communities and the issues they are facing.
Created in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, Local Media Foundation, News is Out and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, the report shows how these vital outlets, face shrinking advertising revenue, little foundation support and growing external threats, even as their audiences surge. The findings underscore both the challenges and resilience of queer media, and call for greater investment to ensure these essential voices continue to serve their communities.
