A MacArthur-supported project to use social media to empower young people with accurate, timely, and non-judgmental information about sexual and reproductive health is expanding. Since its launch in 2007, OneWorld UK's project "Learning about Living" has seen 400,000 queries to its SMS platform (with girls' share doubling) and over 110,000 students in more than 200 schools participating in its eLearning program. The confidential nature of SMS, phones, and the Web enables young people to seek information discretely, overcoming social barriers. Now the Packard Foundation is funding an adaptation of the project in northern Nigeria, and Oxfam Novib, a co-funder of the original project, is adapting it for Senegal, Morocco, Mali, and Egypt.
