Peru has designated 3.3 million acres of Amazonian rainforest as a new national park in the Sierra del Divisor mountain range, protecting unique wildlife habitats and uncontacted indigenous people who live there by preventing illegal logging, coca cultivation, and gold mining that has threatened the area for years. The designation comes after a decade of work advocating for the creation of the national park by the MacArthur-supported Field Museum and other conservation groups. The Field did an initial flyover of the site in 2002 and completed an inventory of the region in 2005 that led to the discovery of more than 20 species new to science.
