Scientists supported by MacArthur grantee the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund have discovered a new species of elephant-shrew in a remote Tanzanian forest. The animal, the size of a small dog, is covered in orange and gray fur and has a long snout like an elephant. The new species is found only in two high-altitude forest blocks in the mountains of south-central Tanzania, a biodiversity hotspot for MacArthur’s conservation and sustainable development grantmaking.
