Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health has approved the inclusion of misoprostol on the Essential Drug List (EDL). Misoprostol is used for the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality. Its inclusion on the EDL, which gives the drug the status of national priority, follows a MacArthur-supported research report on community-based use of the drug conducted by Dr. Clara Ejembi at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.
