Madagascar has committed to triple the country’s marine protected areas and establish a legal framework to protect community management of fishing grounds. Madagascar President Hery Rajaonarimampianina made the announcement at the recent IUCN World Parks Congress, along with staff from MacArthur grantee Blue Ventures, which worked with Madagascar to establish the Indian Ocean’s largest locally managed marine area at the Barren Isles. The action means these protected marine areas now cover more than seven percent of Madgascar’s inshore seabed.
