New York State has approved juvenile justice reforms that will keep thousands of teenagers out of adult courts and adult correctional facilities. Until now, New York has been one of only two states that sends 16- and 17- year-olds to adult prisons. Driven in part by the efforts of the MacArthur-supported National Campaign to Reform State Juvenile Justice Systems, the state legislature approved reforms that will divert teens to family courts and alternative programs, or to judges with access to social services and special training.
