India's Ministry of Environment and Forests has announced that it will adopt a series of recommendations, which were developed by MacArthur grantee Community Forestry International (CFI), for improved forest management in the Northeast region of the country. The Ministry will develop guidelines for the region's eight state forest departments to implement the new policies that take account of the traditional land tenure systems, which are communally managed. CFI was able to craft the forestry recommendations by bringing together state-level government officials, community representatives, forest researchers and university professors.
