At least 20 peasant and indigenous communities in Northern Bolivia are implementing fire management practices, organizing fire response brigades, and implementing a fire risk warning system with the help of Fundación Amigos de la Naturaleza, a MacArthur grantee implementing the innovative community-based approach as a means of adapting land-use practices to climate change. Because rural farmers use controlled burns in agriculture, the communities now coordinate their burns through a shared calendar and monitor fire risks throughout the year. Coordinating fire response and management strategies will help reduce fire’s negative impacts on biodiversity and rural communities in the Bolivian lowland forests.
