American Bird Conservancy (ABC) has a mission focused on the conservation of native birds and their habitats throughout the Americas, and has long worked with local partners and communities in the tropical Andes to manage natural resources for multiple benefits. ABC is working with Asociación Ecosistemas Andinas (ECOAN) to legally establish and sustainably manage nine community conservation areas in the Cordillera Vilcanota, restore native habitats, secure critical water resources, and connect local environmental enterprises to the flourishing tourism market in Cusco, Peru. The efforts address a critical sustainability gap, setting up diversified income streams for conservation uses during the three years before an endowment for the conservation areas stabilizes and fulfills a financial sustainability plan for the project.
