Grants

2013 (2 years 9 months)
$490,000

This grant provides support for a regional dialogue consisting of scholars from the U.S., Mexico, and Central America who will conduct research and make policy recommendations on migration in the region. CIESAS (www.ciesas.edu.mx), a social science research institute based in Mexico City, will lead the dialogue in cooperation with Georgetown University and Central American partner universities.

2012 (2 years 2 months)
$50,000

Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (Center for Research and Higher Education in Social Anthropology, or CIESAS) is a multi-disciplinary social science research center with a reputation for conducting rigorous policy-oriented research. The grant supports the development and initial implementation of a demonstration project in Oaxaca to prevent maternal mortality by increased access to maternal and neonatal health and emergency obstetric care. The demonstration project has been designed by the state Ministry of Health, CIESAS, and international partners. It involves several initiatives that MacArthur has been supporting in Mexico that will be rolled out in one locality. The project is designed as part of Oaxaca’s collaboration agreement with the World Bank, in which maternal mortality prevention is priority. Evidence suggests that social support networks in maternal and neonatal health are crucial to help women reach care when needed. Such networks in Oaxaca mostly exist on paper and lack operational functionality. This grant enables CIESAS to work with health workers and authorities in ten communities to lay the foundation for improved use of social support networks functionality to facilitate timely access to maternal and emergency obstetric care. The demonstration project is being scaled up and expanded to additional regions in Oaxaca and has the potential to be replicated in other states
