The Children First Fund: The Chicago Public Schools Foundation (CFF) is the Chicago Public Schools' (CPS) 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established in 1996 to serve as a fiscal agent for foundation and business grants and individual donations to CPS schools and administrative units for programs that supplement educational opportunities. The Global Citizenship Initiative seeks to rebuild the civic mission in high schools in Chicago, to ensure that all students are not only equipped to pursue college and career opportunities, but also to participate actively in public life. The grant supports the next phase of development and implementation of the Global Citizenship Initiative in its work with 35 CPS high schools to build teacher capacity to provide high-quality civic education, instruction, and learning; and to increase student capacity to develop civic knowledge, skills, attitudes, and habits.

2013 (1 year)
$250,000

The Children First Fund is Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) fiscal agent for grants and donations for supplemental educational programs in CPS schools. Its Global Citizenship Initiative seeks to re-build the civic mission in Chicago’s high schools, so that all students are equipped both for college and career opportunities and for participating actively in public life. In its pilot phase, 16 CPS high schools introduced a Civics/Financial Literacy course for seniors; a student leadership project; and service-learning and civic action practices in Social Science classrooms. This grant helps fund its second year of operation, expansion from 16 to 30 schools, and adding digital media and civic engagement curricular modules.
