World Health Organization

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the directing and coordination authority for health within the United Nations system. In this project, the WHO headquarters in Geneva is partnering with the WHO country office for India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and in-country midwifery leaders to develop a national roadmap for strengthening midwifery services. The group is also developing an operational plan to improve midwifery in districts with high maternal mortality and a district implementation model to improve the quality of midwifery services in the public sector. The project is testing the district implementation plans in two districts to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model, and using the findings to advocate for scale up.

The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), launched in 2005, is a global health partnership to accelerate efforts toward achieving global goals on child, adolescent, maternal, and reproductive health. The Partnership is hosted by the World Health Organization, and is made up of a constituency of about 700 members. This award provides general operating support to the Partnership for priority actions in its five-year work plan, which contributes to the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on reduction of preventable mortality and morbidity of women, children, and adolescents.

In this project, WHO staffis developing a post-hoc evaluation toolkit for young people's sexual and reproductive health programming. The toolkit is expected to assist researchers, program managers, and policy makers to use existing data or to collect a minimal amount of data to better assess and document the success ( or failure) of interventions aimed at improving young people sexual and reproductive health.

The purpose of the grant is to support a Medical Officer (MO) position at the World Health Organization. The role of the MO is to serve as a technical expert within the WHO and for outside organizations on issues related to maternal and reproductive health in emergency settings.

The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (PMNCH), a global health partnership with more than 450 members housed at the World Health Organization, will advocate for the implementation and scale-up of an essential package of maternal and reproductive health interventions. PMNCH will also add young people’s reproductive health issues to those addressed by the partnership.
