The award supports the design and launch of a national competition for state health systems to integrate professional midwifery into their primary health level centers. States have the possibility to compete for funding to improve or introduce midwifery into their services, with the intention of generating eight anticipated state-based, state-designed projects to consolidate the provision of women-centered, respectful reproductive and maternal health care by professional midwives. Winning projects are working to change or strengthen their services, learn from one another in meetings held to share information and strategies, and be more connected to non-profit national and international organizations engaged in midwifery.
