Miles Por Los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos (Miles for Sexual and Reproductive Rights, or Miles) is a Chilean organization specializing in reproductive and sexual health and rights litigation and advocacy to improve access to comprehensive services for women and adolescents. Chile is well known in Latin America for the central role professional midwives play in reproductive health services: it has the oldest, most institutionalized midwifery model in the region, and also serves as a World Health Organization learning center for other countries. Miles is working with the Mexico City Health Ministry on a program in a major maternity hospital to introduce midwifery practice throughout the continuum of care. The project entails learning exchanges between Mexico and Chile and month-long advisory phases in which Chilean midwives will be on-site at the hospital to work with health teams, and to provide learning opportunities for other health centers. The project will provide knowledge and experience that will help build a pathway toward the integration of midwives into the City's public health system.
