The National Association of Perinatal and Obstetric Midwives was founded in 2005 as a membership organization to promote professional midwifery in Mexico through education, research, promotion of clinical excellence, and the expansion of the workforce under regulations that establish midwifery as the standard of care for women and newborns. With this award, the Association is reaching out to health providers with vocational, bachelor’s, and post-graduate training in midwifery to engage them as advocates and promoters of midwifery and designing and implementing a certification process in conjunction with the Mexican Confederation of Nurses and the Ministry of Health. It is also training midwifery professors according to international teaching standards; promoting midwifery training; compiling and disseminating training materials from other Spanish-speaking countries; and serving as a point of contact with relevant international agencies.
