Our Grantmaking in Nigeria
Nigeria is an economic powerhouse and the most populous nation on the African continent. Its transition to democracy represents an important opportunity for contributing to both national and regional stability. MacArthur has been making grants in Nigeria since 1989, opening an office in Abuja in 1994 with a staff of Nigerians who know and love their country. The Foundation has supported work in Nigeria in the fields of higher education, population and reproductive health, human rights and international justice, and girls’ secondary education. MacArthur’s current work is primarily focused on promoting an atmosphere of accountability, transparency, and good governance in the country by reducing retail corruption and strengthening Nigerian-led anti-corruption efforts.
