Our Grantmaking in India
MacArthur has been active in India since 1990 and opened an office in New Delhi in 1994, led by a staff of Indians who know and love their country. The Foundation’s presence in-country has enabled it to work and partner directly with a diverse set of individuals and institutions who have and continue to play a remarkable role in the field of maternal and reproductive health and in promoting the participation of girls in accessing quality secondary education in the country. Resulting from internal deliberations, the Foundation is currently supporting the implementation of a legacy phase for its Population and Reproductive Health program and an exit phase for its Girls Secondary Education program. There is also limited grantmaking focused on internet governance as part of the Foundation's interest in advancing technology in the public interest.
Since 2016, the Foundation’s key focus in India has been to support mitigation interventions that seek sustainable solutions to challenges India faces from climate change. The Foundation makes available resources to established civil society organizations with recognized expertise in the field of climate change mitigation. Typically, these institutions work in close partnership with diverse sets of stakeholders – including established public institutions and other civil society actors.
