prison-policy-200

An artistic collaboration between Prison Policy Initiative and data journalist and illustrator Mona Chalabi provides a visualization of the 10.6 million jail admissions in the United States every year. The visualization takes the viewer through various time periods of jail incarceration during which certain consequences are explained; for example, 26 percent of jail suicides occur within three days of admission and 40 percent of all jail deaths occur within one week of admission. The project is intended to convey the massive scale of U.S. jail admission and incarceration and to raise awareness of the consequences of even a short jail stay.
