Strict enforcement of the Iran nuclear deal and pursuit of civil nuclear cooperation among governments that meet U.S. nonproliferation interests are two of several policy steps that can be taken to dissuade other Middle Eastern countries from developing a nuclear weapons program, according to a report by the Brookings Institution. The MacArthur-supported report explores the likelihood that, in the wake of the Iran deal, regional countries will pursue their own nuclear weapons programs. It draws on interviews with senior government officials and nongovernment experts to focus in depth on the possible motivations and capabilities of Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Video is available of the report release and panel discussion where authors Robert Einhorn and Richard Nephew discuss their findings.
