Visualizations from Prison Policy Initiative show the reality of the 1.9 million people who are incarcerated in the U.S. in the Whole Pie 2023 report. It debunks nine myths about mass incarceration and discusses how releasing people before trial and reducing jail populations does not harm public safety. The report also includes other aspects of the carceral system like community supervision, which often creates a cycle of unnecessary incarceration instead of rewarding success. With this data, grantee Prison Policy Initiative provides a foundation to move reform forward.
