For the first time, more than half of all U.S. renters spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent, according to a new report released by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. The MacArthur-supported report finds affordability problems for renters have skyrocketed over the past decade both in number and the share of renters facing them. The escalating affordability problem comes at a time when the number of Americans who rent is increasing while wages remain stagnant.
