Neighborhood surveillance tools and apps reduce sense of safety and community trust, according to a report, The Spy Next Door, from Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.). Apps like Nextdoor, Citizen, and Ring increase racial profiling, create suspicion around ordinary activities, and encourage vigilantism. In addition to these problems, the apps pose a privacy for their users. S.T.O.P., a grantee, recommends legal interventions like stronger privacy laws to counter the abuses.
