Public defenders play a critical role in preventing unnecessary and unjust incarceration. As part of the Safety and Justice Challenge, the National Legal Aid & Defender Association developed a communications toolkit to help defenders better articulate the role the public defender can play in an effective criminal justice system. The toolkit includes messages, media relations guidance, and community engagement tips to enhance contributions public defenders can make to advancing justice reform and advocating for robust public defense systems.
