A report from the Washington Office on Latin America, a MacArthur grantee, examines how corruption threatens the integrity of Mexico’s electoral processes, the role of corruption officials in facilitating and perpetrating violence and human rights abuses, and the effects of graft, embezzlement, and corrupt business practices on economic growth and inequality. The report asserts that the newly established National Anti-Corruption System, charged with coordinating anti-corruption efforts at the federal and state levels, has been hobbled by lack of political will to give the system the resources and independence it needs to be fully effective. The report calls on the Mexican government to take actions that will empower the system and promote the adoption of anti-corruption reforms across states.
