Change From the Outside” from the Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) identifies policy interventions to support third party auditors of AI systems. AJL’s Deborah Raji, Sasha Costanza-Chock, and Dr. Joy Buolamwini noted these missing links and contributed the paper to a UNESCO “Missing Links in AI Governance”. Recommendations include legal protections, accreditation, standards for AI products, incident reporting, mandatory disclosures, shifting focus form simply bias to harms, and strong accountability mechanisms. Better scrutiny from outsiders can help protect human rights for those most likely to be harmed by AI systems in their communities.
