The News Organizations Safety Self-Assessment is a tool to help news outlets review and improve safety protocols that can protect newsrooms and journalists in the field. It was created by A Culture of Safety Alliance, a project of the Overseas Press Club Foundation that brings together advocates in professional and nonprofit reporting, including the Committee to Protect Journalists. The MacArthur-supported guide recognizes the important role that news managers, publishers, executive directors, and editors play in advancing a culture of safety and provides them with key steps to help improve security. The tool pays special attention to gender issues, mental health care, digital security needs, and working with freelancers—items often neglected in traditional organizational policy and protocols.
