A case study from Urban Institute on how Cumberland County, Maine is better meeting women’s needs as they enter and leave jail shares valuable lessons with other jurisdictions. The program developed screenings to better understand their histories of trauma and connect women with services they need before and after release from jail. The MacArthur-supported report found close coordination between organizations and within communities improved the program’s outcomes. Overall, the program reduced barriers to release, and the women in the program were connected with services, like domestic violence support, more effectively.
