Mapping the Use of Internet Surveillance and Censorship Technology

Citizen Lab, an Internet research group based at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs, has released a report documenting the use of American-made Internet surveillance and censorship technology by more than a dozen governments, including some with rigid human rights policies like Syria, China, and Saudi Arabia. Citizen Lab researchers state there is a need for national and international scrutiny of how countries are implementing these technologies to ensure they are not used to violate human rights. The report, supported by MacArthur, is intended to make the public aware of the growing amount of surveillance and content-filtering technology on the Internet.
