Lack of diversity in artificial intelligence workplaces and biased technologies are deeply interconnected, according to a report from the AI Now Institute, a MacArthur-supported initiative at New York University. The report suggests current methods of addressing diversity in the field have largely failed, and it recommends strategies that could better address workplace diversity, including transparent and equitable compensation, openly addressing discrimination and harassment, and incentivizing diverse hiring practices. According to the report, transparency is essential for remedying bias in AI systems and, therefore, should be required across AI systems and especially in sensitive domains such as education, healthcare, and criminal justice.
