Eight leading oil and gas companies in the U.S. have made climate commitments but have not reduced emissions. A report from Earthworks shows the deceptive practices that “greenwash” companies to make them look more climate friendly. The report found 40-60 percent of the emissions reductions claimed by four companies were from divesting from polluting assets with no net reduction in emissions. None of the companies studied provide enough data to demonstrate progress, and, even by their own standards, they are falling short of their goals. Earthworks, a grantee, calls for more government intervention to regulate the companies for both health and climate protection.
