Philanthropy has a role to play in ensuring Native perspectives are reflected in policies and institutions that impact their lives. A report on Native justice from the First Nations Development Institute, a grantee, includes recommendations for funders to center Native people in grantmaking and foster relationships with Native and Indigenous communities. Including staff who represent the communities served, reducing administrative burdens on grantees, and supporting Native leadership and decision making can all help recalibrate the environment toward human relationships and our interrelatedness. Nonprofit Quarterly, which MacArthur supports, shared key ideas and areas for philanthropic attention.
