Disinformation, Misinformation, and Mal-information Exposed in Nigerian Elections

A report on the role of social media in election campaigns in Nigeria illuminated the flow of disinformation, misinformation, and mal-information from politicians and social influencers across digital channels. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), a grantee, identified actors spreading these challenges and showed strategies and economics behind the efforts. The report notes their severe potential consequences in the upcoming Nigerian elections, ranging from changed votes to post-election violence. The CDD report includes recommendations such as increased collaboration among media and civil society organizations and highlighting the positive aspects of social media, such as a more digitally informed and educated citizenry.
