Community-based services that address mental health, substance use, homelessness, and interpersonal violence help make stronger communities. But jails are often the first response to these situations in the U.S. A report from Vera Institute of Justice highlights alternatives that can strengthen communities as they address challenges. The MacArthur supported report shows how public health programs, crisis centers, housing solutions, and violence interruption that collaborate with communities are needed elements of public safety.
