A report by the FrameWorks Institute finds that Americans hold deep assumptions about artificial intelligence that challenge open and critical conversations about its social implications. This makes it hard to show the public how AI is used within existing systems of power and oppression. The MacArthur-supported report identifies five key obstacles that researchers, activists, and advocates face in communicating AI’s relationship with inequity, such as not fully understanding what predictive algorithms are or how they work. FrameWorks recommends ways to build a more critical and productive conversation around AI and increase support for needed policies.
