Groundwater monitoring data in Illinois reveal unsafe levels of pollution from coal ash dump sites, according to a report from MacArthur grantees Earthjustice, Sierra Club, and their partners. Data show water well contamination at 22 of the 24 sites used for disposal from coal-fired powerplants. Earthjustice and Sierra Club recommend improving preventative measures at the sites, providing opportunities for public participation in regulations, and requiring companies who dump coal ash to clean up leaching sites.
