A map of the united states, dotted with blue markers, demonstrating the participants in the national Safety and Justice Challenge.

With 10 years of work to safely reduce jail populations and advance equity, the communities participating in the Safety and Justice Challenge have a wealth of lessons, challenges, and successes to help other jurisdictions that face similar issues.

Urban Institute has helped document their work, combining information from people directly involved with local criminal justice systems with analysis by the Institute for State and Local Governance. The results are in 26 SJC case studies, featuring 37 Safety and Justice Challenge jurisdictions across 25 states.

Insights can help communities across the country, dealing with topics including community engagement; data and coordination; diversion and alternatives to incarceration; pretrial processes; re-entry; and systemwide approaches.
