AI Now report cover 240

AI Now Institute’s annual report on the state of the field of artificial intelligence explores the growing movement taking action against harmful AI that perpetuates, or even increases, inequality. One of the key takeaways found that affect recognition—interpreting facial expressions—especially as it is used in hiring processes, does not account for the variability of facial expressions and generates biased outcomes. MacArthur-supported AI Now Institute makes recommendations for the field and further regulation, including halting harmful practices and increasing transparency and public oversight on AI’s uses.
