whole pie 2019 240

Prison Policy Initiative updated its “Whole Pie” report on the 231,000 women and girls who are incarcerated. These women face unique challenges and play important roles in their families and communities. But in the past decade, the federal government has not collected underlying data on incarcerated women, and data on gender in the justice system is often hard to find or missing. For this report, MacArthur-grantee Prison Policy aggregates what is available from a variety of agencies and breaks down the data by correctional systems—like jails, federal prison, immigration detention, state prison, and youth incarceration—and the reasons the women are incarcerated.
