A report from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs shows that the surge of unaccompanied child migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border in the summer of 2014 had little effect on a 20-year trend of decreasing public concern over immigration. Polling by the Council before and after the surge shows that a record low portion of the public perceives large numbers of immigrants and refugees entering the United States as a “critical threat” and that the long-term trend of declining importance placed on “controlling and reducing illegal immigration” has held steady.
