AI_Ethics_200

In its 2018 report on the state of artificial intelligence, the AI Now Institute makes the case for integrating more robust ethical safeguards in the AI field. The report compiles research that addresses the “accountability gap” in AI, persistence of bias, potential for abuse by those in power, and unresolved questions of responsibility and remedies for harms caused. Supported by MacArthur, AI Now recommends key policy shifts addressing all stages of AI development and use—including stronger sector-specific oversight, institutional transparency, increased diversity within the field, and organizational governance changes that ensure worker representation and whistleblower protections.
