The Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. government needs a warrant to collect massive amounts of location data about customers of cellphone companies. The ruling will protect “deeply revealing” records associated with 400 million devices, and will have implications for other kinds of digital data that provide a detailed look at a person’s private life. The work of several MacArthur grantees, including the Foundation for Criminal Justice, Stanford Law School, the Knight First Amendment Institute, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, informed the decision. Nate Wessler in the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the ACLU, another grantee, argued the case before the court.
