A project by the nonprofit newsroom ProPublica will monitor data from social media and other sources to highlight potential voting irregularities or ballot access issues that might arise during the 2016 election and help journalists across the country cover problems in real time. Electionland will operate from a pop-up newsroom on Election Day at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and will bring in data from Facebook Signal, Twitter, Google Trends, and the Election Protection project, which takes calls about voting issues from voters around the country. Once the data is verified, the leads will be sent to reporters who can follow up on issues that arise in their coverage area. The MacArthur-supported ProPublica has also launched Election DataBot, an interactive database that can help make sense of election data such as campaign finance and election forecasting.
