An initiative by MacArthur grantee Pratham seeks to address the needs of girls in India who have dropped out of school and still wish to complete their secondary school education. In addition to education courses, the Pratham Open School provides young women some vocational skills so that they are able to “pay back” for the course in kind by promising to teach at least 20 children in their respective villages. In spring 2013, a class of 257 women in Odisha who previously dropped out of school had 62 percent of its class pass state certification examinations. A new video from Pratham provides a glimpse into the program and the lives of its students.
