Panama papers

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, a project of MacArthur grantee The Center for Public Integrity, launched an unprecedented investigation revealing the offshore financial secrets of some of the world’s most prominent figures in what has become known as the Panama Papers investigation. The consortium, along with the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung and more than 100 other media partners, spent a year sifting through 11.5 million leaked files to expose the offshore holdings of political leaders and detail the hidden financial dealings of drug traffickers, billionaires, celebrities, and more. With nearly 40 years of data from a little-known but powerful law firm based in Panama, it is considered the largest such data leak in history. Stories from the data will continue to be reported, and an explanatory video explains why the project is so important.
