Several MacArthur grantees have helped put key facts and analysis on the public record regarding a new nuclear facility in North Korea. In late October, The Institute for Science and International Security used publicly available satellite photos to identify the uranium enrichment facility and its potential. On November 21, Sig Hecker at Stanford University visited the facility as part of a Stanford University team supported by MacArthur, and was reportedly "stunned" by the facility’s sophistication. The Stanford team also included John Lewis and Bob Carlin. The New York Times reported on the facility and its possible significance.
